VistaDB 3.0 leads .NET developers to Windows Mobile 5.0

Vista Software's recently released VistaDB 3.0 ushers in the next generation of mobile development by enabling .NET developers to build fully managed and embedded SQL database applications for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Microsoft Compact Framework

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Aug. 6th, 2006 – Vista Software today announced that it's recently released VistaDB 3.0 Community Technology Preview has paved the way for .NET developers to build the next generation of database applications for the Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 platform for many years to come.

The recent success of the Motorola Q Smartphone and the Palm Treo 700w Pocket PC have triggered demand for components and tools, such as VistaDB 3.0, that enable developers to build mobile applications for these devices. Both phones ship with the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and Compact Framework pre-installed.

According to Carrabino, VistaDB 3.0 makes it easy for .NET developers to apply their existing knowledge of building SQL-based database applications for the desktop to building embedded database applications for mobile devices. Applications developed using VistaDB 3.0 can be deployed to any platform that supports Microsoft's .NET Framework and Compact Framework because VistaDB 3.0 conforms strictly to the Common Language Runtime (CLR) managed and typesafe architecture. This means applications developed with VistaDB 3.0 run natively on Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC and Smartphone Editions, Windows XP and Windows Vista when it ships next year.

While developers have always been able to build mobile applications that connect to remote database servers, VistaDB 3.0 enables developers to build a new generation of embedded database applications that manage data locally on the mobile device without having to connect to a database server. The company believes that consumer demand will increase for embedded database applications that run on mobile devices.

Carrabino went on to say that in order to ease the learning curve and improve adoptability of VistaDB 3.0 by developers, the company has taken special care to design the VistaDB 3.0 V-SQL language to be highly compatible with Microsoft's ubiquitous SQL Server Transact-SQL syntax. Other key features that the company hopes will help developers adopt VistaDB 3.0 in droves include a small 600KB embedded footprint, full Unicode support, support for SQL Server's native data types and royalty-free distribution.
