Screen movies and learning
Are you a visual learner? Most people are. How many times have you read the instructions in a tech manual about click this menu, sub menu, sub menu item and gotten lost? Isn’t it a lot easier when you see someone go to that menu item? I am a huge fan of screen captured movies to demonstrate how to do tasks within modern GUI systems. It is one thing to tell a user to go to this menu and click here, etc. It is quite another to show them the menus and how you actually used it. Many times in the VS 2005 GUI users don’t know the names of the various things you can actually click. There are several things you can right click in VS 2005 that were non-intuitive to me the first time I saw someone use them. I first became aware of these types of videos when I was learning Dot Net. I stumbled into the site LearnVisualStudio.net. It is a great resource for people learning Dot Net. I was amazed how much faster you could learn certain tasks by watching the person perform them rather than just read the text and then hunt through the menus. First App Sample recorded with Camtasia I use Camtasia (from Techsmith.com) to record my screen presentations. I have used it to record Powerpoint slides, online conferences, product demos, and even steps to reproduce a bug for tech support to companies. It is a great resource for any company to have, not just programmers. Please visit the Getting Started tutorial (First Application Page - Click the Watch getting started video link ) to see what I am talking about. This is the same Getting Started demo from the documentation and our site, but done with Camtasia. I have already heard from a few people that they can't view it because it is too large. I will record another one at a smaller resolution. And of course if you have demos you would like to see please post your requests.
