Build availability announcements…

written by Jason Short on Saturday, May 26 2007

I have received a number of PM's on the forums and emails asking me how a user can tell if they have the most recent version of VistaDB.  It is a very valid point, and one that has been on my mind a lot lately. I setup a poll on the forums to ask about it (please vote). It seems that a number of people emailed me and said that Anthony used to email them when a new build was available, and a number of others were of the opinion that it was always done on this blog.  I think the answer is both, it was done both ways from time to time. I am trying to standardize things and get everyone to use the same procedure.  But, I want to know what people want before we make that procedure. Auto notification My first thought was, auto notifcation, duh!  And then after we talked about it internally it became not so clear.  Where would the notification take place?  Obviously not in the VistaDB DLL because that could be on a customer machine and we don't ever want to update the DLL without you knowing about it. Then we though the Data Builder, but a lot of people don't use the data builder. OK, how about the Visual Studio plugin?  If you are loading the database in a development environment that seems a pretty clear indication you might like to know there is a newer version, right?  But of course not everyone uses Visual Studio...  So then we thought maybe a local app that is part of your VistaDB installation (you could run it manually if you want).  Or you could schedule it to run every xx days and tell you when a new version is on the site.  And you could even tell the Visual Studio plugin to check with the update exe every so often to see if it has been run recently. What do you guys think?  Please post in the forums under the poll for this topic.  I know we need some way for everyone to know when a new build is out, but what would you like to see? Builds The most recent stable build is 25 from May 14th. And the most recent development build is 26 from May 21st.
