Dog food update, site now on VistaDB 3.2

written by Jason Short on Friday, September 14 2007

I just wanted to post an update on our own dog food progress.  We are currently running VistaDB 3.2 on the download site, and on a number of other parts of the backend systems.  I built a page that will let you see the exact @@VERSION string in use on the server here: About Site Information Page

VistaDB 3.2 (C) 2007 VistaDB Software, Inc. All rights reserved. Provider: 3.2.37 Runtime: 2.0

As I type that is the version on the site.  The complete giveaway system, downloads, and trial are all running VistaDB 3.2 databases. The Emerald Spam Shield systems are about 75% converted over to VistaDB 3.2 right now as well.  The only systems that have not been converted are ones that we just have not needed to touch yet. If it works, and does not need any new features we are leaving it on VDB 2.1 for now.

What’s left to convert?

The biggest thing left to go live is the online store.  It is huge and complex.  Not because of the database itself (although that is large), but mostly due to the complexity of the serial number system.  Serial number upgrade paths and SKU tracking are the most complicated things at this point.  I have a complete replacement running right now, but I am reluctant to turn it live. The new store means completely replacing the ASP driven part of the site.   I have a complete new site built on ASP.NET 2, and AJAX almost ready.  I am not quite happy with the page layout of the new site though.  It is a chicken and egg problem.  If I turn on the store with the new layout and not the main site it will look strange to new users.

After I finish all the testing for 3.2 I will divert my time to the site until the store is live.  It just has to happen.
