Many months ago, I started a Microsoft .NET project where thousands of clients have to connect to a server. When a client connects, the server has to send some information stored in a database to the clients. Because most of the clients may connect at the same time, the need for a fast database engine was a major factor. Because MS-Access (Jet) was unable to respond to the demand, I had to search for an alternative. I didn't want to use old technology like xBase and I tried to look using MSDE. Well, I should tell you that I was disappointed about its size (70 megs) and a lot of configuration requirements. How to properly configure a monster like this during my application setup?

Finally, I found VistaDB. The database wasn't even available for testing but the .NET solution proposed was interesting: Direct Data Access with promised speed comparable to the major databases. And what about the price! So, I decided to wait for this DB.

I created my project with this database in mind and I started using the Beta version as soon as it became available, modifying my procedures to use the DDA engine. I soon find that VistaDB will deliver their promises. Now, my project is almost completed and VistaDB is exactly the solution I was looking for. Its speed and flexibility give me all the control I need with only 2 DLLs. No complicated configuration or installation. A real .NET solution. And I didn't talk about the support: I give them 6 stars out of 5 ! Now, I talk about VistaDB to all my colleagues. Lets spread the good news to .NET developers!
