As a developer I much prefer utilizing a stand-alone database type distribution when needed; especially when it comes to personal use applications.

But for a .NET developer this is easier said than done. If you want to keep everything within a .NET environment you basically have a choice of using SQL Server or MSDE (Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine). Now for personal use applications having SQL Server installed is totally impractical; not that using MSDE is anymore practical considering the hoops a developer has to go through to get a usable database on the client computer.

This was a problem I had to face with an upcoming project that needed to have a stand-alone database engine that was full featured, a native .NET implementation and easy to install.

After searching around I ran across a BLOG that mentioned a product in development called VistaDB that billed itself as an easy to use .NET SQL database engine. So needless to say I promptly hopped over to their website and read through all the available information about their product. Granted at this point version 2.0 was still in beta stage but I still plonked down the money for a licence - and haven't regretted that move since.

As their product approaches a finally version 2.0 release VistaDB has become one of my favourite developer tools and I would heartily recommend that anyone looking to add stand-alone database capabilities to their .NET application (WinForm and WebForm) to give this product some very serious consideration.

One other thing about VistaDB that should be mentioned as well, and can't be praised enough, is the high level of customer support from the development team. It has got to be some of the best support I have seen for a developer product. So what are you waiting for .. get on over there and have a look for yourself.
