VistaDB Server 2.1

The VistaDB 2.1 Server is an optional backend database server for proviting remote access to managing VistaDB databases. It supports the same .VDB databases as the embedded engine. The VistaDB Server is not required it to build applications.

VistaDB Server runs as a Windows Service or as a console application to provide high-speed client/server SQL support in a shared network environment, on a LAN or over the Internet to applications developed using VistaDB components. Client applications communicate with the VistaDB Server over a high-speed, secure TCP/IP protocol.

Developers use one of the VistaDB 2.1 products (.NET, VCL or OLE DB) to create client applications that connect to the VistaDB Server. A VistaDB client application can continue to use the VistaDB embedded engine for managing data locally and can dynamically switch to a client server configuration with only 5 lines of code!

Set the IP address, port #, user name and password in your client application and developers can harness the power of a true client/server architecture.

VistaDB Server SDL and UDL editions support an unlimited number of concurrent client connections. The free 2-User edition supports up to 2 concurrent users, which is ideal for testing and for simply accessing data remotely over TCP/IP. Like the embedded engine, the VistaDB Server application has a very small 200KB footprint. Combined with the embedded engine, the total footprint for the VistaDB Server is only 700KB.

VistaDB applications to run in either embedded mode or client/server mode, or both with very little code changes! Simply set a few properties in the components at runtime to switch between embedded or server database access ((AccessMethod from Local to Remote, setting the Server IP Address, Port, User Name and Password)

VistaDB Server is the ideal alternative to MSDE and SQL Express for building multi-user and network enabled .small to midsize applications. VistaDB Server provides true client/server SQL database management for multi-user applications running in shared network environments, LANs and for applications that require remote access to data. High-speed SQL-92 support and secure TCP/IP connectivity provide SQL Server-type database management in a tiny 600KB easy-to-deploy footprint. The VistaDB Server can to run as a Windows service or console application that extend the VistaDB embedded editions.

VistaDB Server delivers 10 to 30 times faster performance over a similar embedded solution. VistaDB client applications connect over TCP/IP to a VistaDB Server and send SQL commands for processing. The VistaDB Server processes these commands on the server, optionally returning result sets back to the client application. The VistaDB Server may reside locally, in an LAN, or remotely on some computer accessible by TCP/IP.

The VistaDB Server is a much better solution than Jet/Access and even VistaDB embedded editions for building multi-user applications in a network environment for the following reasons:

• VistaDB Server provides 10-30x better performance over embedded configurations
• Only the requested data is sent back to the requesting client machines, whereas embedded systems must send the entire database file to each client machine. This drastically reduces network traffic.
• Opening a database in a shared network drive (e.g. F:\) from an embedded application causes the Windows client machine to use large amounts of resources to support file sharing. These resources cause the database file to be opened in shared mode, which is very slow. However, the VistaDB Server opens database once in exclusive mode, which gives it high-speed central data access.
• Centralized server data management for multi-user applications greatly improves the ability to maintain data integrity since.
• Processing is performed on the server, which frees up client computer resources

The small 600KB footprint is tiny in comparison to the MSDE's huge 70MB set of files. VistaDB Server is designed to deliver robust SQL backend data management in LANs, shared networks, web servers and for VistaDB applications that need to access data remotely over the Internet. The built-in high-speed TCP/IP connectivity makes data access easy, fast and secure. Performance is fantastic.
